Why do I need a MID-certified measurement for charging stations in my property?
If, in a property, the electricity consumption of charging stations is billed individually per tenant or user based on kWh, clear legal requirements apply in Switzerland.
What does this mean in practice?
As soon as electricity consumption serves as the basis for individual recharging (on-billing), the energy measurement must be carried out using a MID-certified measuring device.
What is MID certification?
MID stands for Measuring Instruments Directive (EU Directive 2004/22/EC on measuring instruments).
A measuring device is considered MID-certified if:
- it has been tested in accordance with the requirements of this directive
- the manufacturer has issued an official declaration of conformity
- the measurement is carried out in compliance with metrology law and in a legally secure manner
Why is this important?
The Swiss legal framework (Federal Act on Metrology, Ordinance on Measuring Instruments and EMmV) requires legally compliant and verifiable measurement in the case of consumption-based billing.
